Abstract

Water scarcity, groundwater depletion, and watershed degradation are among the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. In response, corporations are shifting from traditional water management practices to holistic water stewardship models aimed at achieving water-positive outcomes. Water stewardship promotes sustainable water use, watershed management, rainwater harvesting, aquifer recharge, and collaborative governance to ensure long-term water security for both communities and ecosystems. An emerging strategy in this context is the ridge-to-valley approach, which treats watersheds as interconnected ecological systems and seeks to restore natural water flows from upland recharge zones to downstream valleys. Water-positive initiatives move beyond merely reducing water consumption by investing in nature-based and community-driven solutions that replenish more water than is used in operations. These interventions include check dams, percolation tanks, afforestation, soil moisture conservation, wetland restoration, and decentralized rainwater harvesting. By integrating hydrology, land management, and biodiversity conservation, the ridge-to-valley approach enhances groundwater recharge and supports balanced water cycles. Increasingly, corporations are collaborating with governments, non-governmental organizations, and local communities to implement scalable, science-based interventions aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), transforming water stewardship into a strategic driver of environmental sustainability and long-term socio-economic resilience.
