Abstract

Since gaining independence, India has steadily emerged as a major force in the field of space technology, strengthening its economic growth, global partnerships, and scientific development. The growth of satellite technology, telecommunications, and international space missions has transformed communication systems and expanded the scope of space-related activities, including satellite services, space exploration, and commercial applications. The establishment of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969 marked a significant step in India’s journey towards becoming a recognised space power, contributing to satellite communication, earth observation, weather forecasting, and national security. This paper examines the evolution of India’s space technology and its growing role in economic and scientific advancement. It analyses major space programmes, including lunar and Mars missions, communication satellites, and international collaborations that have encouraged commercial space exploration and greater participation of private enterprises in the space sector. The study further highlights the legal, ethical, and environmental concerns associated with rapid technological expansion in outer space activities. Through a theoretical analysis of governmental policies and regulatory reforms, the paper seeks to evaluate the contribution of the Indian space industry towards national development and its future prospects in the global space economy.
